Level 5 has been busy with its burgenoning Yo-Kai Watch series, however, and there hasn’t been a definite timeline for the release of Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom or any real glimpses of what it could entail. That’s changed now, as the PlayStation Experience 2016 kickoff show featured a full-blown trailer for the upcoming Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom that also gave it a release date, kind of - at the very least, fans can now officially expect the sequel sometime in 2017.
The trailer featured a brand new cast of characters, centering around a protagonist that appears to be a blonde girl with cat ears and her motley crew of friends. The plot of Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has also gotten its first details, as the protagonist will journey throughout a multitude of different environments with the goal of building a kingdom they can be proud of.
While it’s certainly a vague goal, and future trailers are likely to elaborate much more on what fans can expect, the game looks like it is still fully embracing its Studio Ghibli art and story direction. That’s a big deal, and although it’s not a game made by Hayao Miyazaki outright, it’s pretty close. Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has also retained its predecessor’s status as a PS4 exclusive, which could serve to sway a few gamers over to picking up an upgraded PS4 this holiday season.
For fans of Ni No Kuni, the official reveal of a trailer will come as a relief after such a long dry spell of news surrounding the sequel. Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom shows that Sony is still committed to serving the niche audiences the gaming giant has built up over the years, and given the high regard the original game is held in, it will be interesting to see if Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom ends up living up to expectation in 2017.
Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom will be a PS4 exclusive and will launch sometime in 2017.
