Although many of her answers included phrases like ““I don’t know,’’ ““I don’t recall’’ and ““I have no idea,’’ Jones nonetheless provided an illuminating behind-the scenes glimpse of her professional life. ““I do whatever is necessary to host the show,’’ she told Fred Gibson, a lawyer for Schmitz. Despite her big- bucks salary, that apparently doesn’t amount to much. According to her testimony, Jones has almost no say in production. She doesn’t select the topics, doesn’t talk to guests before they are onstage and doesn’t know what a particular show is about until just hours before the taping.
Schmitz’s lawyers say that when he agreed to be on the show–which was taped March 6, 1995, but never aired–he thought his secret admirer was a woman. He told police he shot Amedure three days later because he was angry over being publicly humiliated. But when Gibson asked Jones if she might have prevented the tragedy by not going for ““this last little attempt to draw out extra emotion,’’ she stood firm. ““I don’t know what you’re talking about,’’ she replied.
