“I do what I want” Kyrgios said after he was quizzed about why he wore red and white trainers on court.

The 27-year-old beat Brandon Nakashima in five sets to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time since 2014 and for the second time in his career.

Strict dress code rules at Wimbledon’s All England Club enforce an all-white attire policy and during a post-match press conference, Kyrgios was quizzed over why he elected to disregard the dress code.

“Because I do what I want,” he answered in footage posted to Twitter by BBC Sport that had clocked up 2.1 million views at the time of writing.

The reporter then asked Kyrgios if he thought he was “above the rules” by not complying with the dress code.

“No, I’m not above the rules,” he responded. “I just like wearing my Jordans. I’ll wear some Triple Whites tomorrow.

“Even after Wimbledon, no one else really walks with Jordans on the court. I don’t moan [about criticism]. I love it.

“More attention for me. What’s that’s saying? Any publicity is good publicity, right?”

He ended the questioning with a wink by telling the journalist: “Keep doing you then champion.”

Kyrgios is receiving praise on social media for how he handled the questioning with one viral tweet reading: “man British people genuinely have hating wired into their DNA. watching this press conference is so triggering.”

Another person commented: “He handled it well, really liked that.”

As the clip remained viral on Tuesday, news broke that Kyrgios is due to appear in court in Canberra in August after being charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) policing confirmed the court date on Tuesday.

“ACT policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT magistrates court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021,” a spokesperson said, per The Guardian.

Kyrgios’ barrister Jason Moffett, said in a statement to The Canberra Times in Australia: “The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr. Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously.

“Given the matter is before the court, he doesn’t have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we’ll issue a media release.”
