The Tampa Bay Lightning changed all of that, sending three first-round picks away in the last two trade deadlines which has resulted in two Stanley Cups. While it’s a risky move for a team’s future, there’s evidence that it pays off when the reward is a championship win. The March 21 trade deadline is still three weeks away, but a first-round pick has already been moved. The Calgary Flames acquired Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens for a package that included a 2022 conditional first-round pick....

The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain reports he would “be surprised” if the Texans don’t trade Clowney before the start of the season. The reason is two-fold: for one, Clowney still has not reported to training camp after the team placed the franchise tag on him this offseason, and secondly, Houston is in need of a left tackle to protect quarterback Deshaun Watson. The 23-year-old was sacked 62 times last season — more than any other quarterback in the NFL....

Sean Payton’s injury-ravaged Saints’ team has already been crowned champions of the NFC South and has little on the line against Carolina. With backs, Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray sidelined due to COVID, and wideouts, Michael Thomas and Deonte Harris unlikely to be risked with the playoffs looming large, Sean Payton could be forced to field a largely inexperienced attacking-unit, which could make for interesting viewing. The Panthers fell short of the playoffs for the third year in a row but head coach, Matt Rhule will be hoping to end a tough season on a high with another win, this time over their fierce division rivals, to add to last week’s victory against Washington Football Team (20-13)....

Speaking to the media last week, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said his club’s first priority is to re-sign Erik Karlsson. However, it was Dorion’s offhand remark noting even a great player such as Wayne Gretzky got traded that created the impression the All-Star defenseman could be in play.
